The seeds of Books by Becka were planted about fifteen years ago. The big kids (who were little then) and I spent a lot of time in libraries in those days, and I was continually frustrated by the difficulty of finding good, trustworthy books. I believe that it is a parent's responsibility to make sure the ideas his child consumes are wholesome, just as diligently as he monitors the food the child eats. So I put a lot of time and energy into guiding my little ones toward certain books and away from others. Then on our way out the door, I'd grab a book or two off the shelves for myself, and often as not, discover once we got home that they were not edifying or suitable reading. The vision of a place where I could in good conscience turn the kids loose to choose anything that caught their eyes, where I could walk in and pick up any book and know it was going to live up to my standards, began growing in the back of my mind at that point.
As the kids grew older, my difficulties only increased. There came a time when they had read everything I knew of that was good for them at their ages, and (because they had become voracious readers) it was physically impossible for me to preview and research all the new material they were interested in. I found that other homeschooling moms of my acquaintance were in a similar position, and several of us started sharing information and opinions about this book and that author...so I began writing reviews. That group didn't hold together in the long run, but it sparked my vision of a community of like-minded readers and writers engaging in meaningful conversation about meaningful books.
Children grow. Adults grow. Circumstances change. Connections are made. There is a time to every purpose under heaven. I am blessed and honored to share Books by Becka with you.
